Gap analysis is simply calculating the difference between a target and actual results. Gap is used in a variety of analysis especially in Performance Management and the Balanced Scorecard.

In the Balanced Scorecard, the organization determines its goals and decides upon a strategy to achieve those goals. Then the organization. must determine targets for the various processes that needed to be performed in order to achieve these targets. Usually there is a gap in various processes between the targets and actual performance.

Once the gaps are identified the organization can use a variety of techniques to close those gaps including 

• Activity Based Costing
• Process Management
• Reengineering
