Steps in process mapping

  1. Why are you creating a process map? (IT process maps are often data flow maps which are different than traditional process maps)

  2. Do you want "as is" or "to be" process map?

  3. Determine level of detail you need to achieve your process mapping goals?

  4. Decide which software you will use?

  5. Decide on just a few simple symbols (e.g. diamonds equal decision points or just use rectangles?

  6. Hang process map on wall for everyone to see

  7. Revise map

  8. Keep process map posted for 

    • new employees

    • suppliers to process

    • customers of process

    • current employees

  9. Update as needed

  10. Improve process
