Process Control Systems are a subset of Business Process Management.
Some people think of Process Control Systems as being equipment and software
to control manufacturing processes like making ketchup, refining crude oil, or
controlling nuclear reactors so they don't over hear.
www.wikipedia.org defines:
Process control is a
statistics and
engineering discipline that deals with
architectures,
mechanisms, and
algorithms for controlling the output of a specific
process.
Consequently process control systems are any system that employs
statistics and engineering discipline that with architecture, mechanisms,
and algorithms for controlling of a specific process.
This does not necessarily have to involve equipment. For example, an
accounting department might employ a simple process control system as
follows. The monthly financial statements need to be finished within 4
working days. If they are finished in less than 3 working days or more than
5 working days, a team will investigate to determine what happened if they
were prepared in grater than 5 days. If they were prepared in less than 3
days a team will determine if a new method has been employed or if critical
steps were left out. This is a very simple process control system.
A more involved system might involve how a team wins a game. There many
processes to be considered: recruiting, training, managing, strategy of
plays injuries, penalties, defense, etc.
